Hub Section Resources

Qlik Sense Security

Overview

When it comes to Qlik Sense Hub, arguably the term “section” is not a proper term to use to describe Hub resource. Component or navigation link may be a better term. In this guide, you will learn about the two “sections” that are available for control in Qlik Sense Hub, what they are, and what built-in security rules are in place to give users access to these two Hub “sections”.

For reference, below are the two available hub section resources that you can use in security rules:

01. Home Section

The exact resource that HubSection_Home resource applies to is this Open hub link that’s available in Navigation menu of a Qlik Sense app. This one:

There is a default security rule called HubSectionHome that gives all users access to this “section”. If HubSectionHome security rule is disabled, users will still be able to access the Hub. What they won’t be able to see is that Open hub link in the Navigation menu. If you would like to test this, follow the steps below.

Step 01.

Go to Security rules section in QMC.

Step 02.

Select HubSectionHome security rule.

Step 03.

Click Edit button.

Step 04.

Check the Disabled checkbox.

Step 05.

Click Apply.

Step 06.

Once HubSectionHome rule is disabled, the Open hub option will no longer be available in the Navigation menu within apps.

That does make the navigation menu cleaner and user interface less redundant. Generally, users go to Qlik Sense Hub and click on an app to open it. Once an app is clicked, it opens in a new tab leaving the Hub page opened in a separate browser tab. In this scenario, unless user closes the Hub page after they opened an app, there’s really no need to have the link navigating user back to the Hub in Navigation menu.

It doesn’t hurt to have the Open hub link in the Navigation menu, but I’m guessing enough people asked to get it removed that Qlik developed a resource to enable us to control who gets to see Open hub link in the Navigation menu.

02. Task Section

Task “section” is also made available to all users by default security rule called HubSectionTask. However, Task “section” is a bit trickier than Home “section”. Even though HubSectionTask rule makes the Task “section” available, it’s not actually visible in the Hub until functionality to reload apps from the Hub is enabled. Once reloading apps from Hub functionality is enabled, users who are permitted to reload apps from the Hub will see Reload and Manage reload tasks menu options when they right-click on an app. Here's a screenshot of the Task "section" items:

Summary

Key Takeaways

  • Hub "sections" are not really sections, they're more like navigation links.

  • Home "section" is the Open hub link that's in Navigation menu in a Qlik Sense app.

  • Task "section" are Reload and Manage reload tasks links that can be seen by right-clicking an app.

  • Task "section" is shown only when reload apps from Hub functionality has been enabled.

Congratulations! You have made it through Qlik Sense resources. This was most involved part of Qlik Sense Security Fundamentals series of guides. Sheer volume of resources shows how customizable Qlik Sense environment is. Qlik didn't hold back there. Access to everything from apps, streams, and data connections to links in Qlik Sense Hub can be customized. We can even control where things like apps are available to a user - only in the Hub, only in QMC, or in both locations. That gives a ton of flexibility for you and me and whatever business we work for to create a Qlik Sense environment for ourselves and our users to be exactly how we want it.

In the next section, we'll shift gears and take a look at different actions that we can permit users to take on different resources and we'll learn more about the context and the idea or controlling access to Qlik Sense resources in the Hub, in QMC, or in both locations. I'll see you in the next lesson!
